The Bolognini Castle of Sant'Angelo was built in the 13th century, on the banks of the river Lambro in a strategic position for controlling the river traffic heading to Milan. The castle was designed in accordance with Lombard military architecture principles, with a quadrilateral plan and corner towers. From the military structure of the Lordship of Milan, it was transformed into a summer residence by Regina della Scala, the wife of Bernabò Visconti, who, in 1383, built the Mastra tower and ordered the construction of the beautiful mullioned windows.
In 1452, with the Visconti's passage of the power of the duchy of Milan to the Sforza family, Francesco Sforza donated the fief and the castle to Michele Matteo Bolognini, who was awarded the title of Count. In 1933, the widow of the Count, the Countess Lydia Caprara Morando Bolognini, created the Morando Bolognini Foundation in memory of her husband, to research and promote farming and converted the Castle into a Museum.
The Bolognini Castle is home to three major museums. Inside the Morando Bolognin Museum you can admire period furniture, paintings and pottery created between 1700 and 1900, as well as wrought iron handicrafts. The library and the armoury are two rooms of particular interest . The Agriculture History Museum tells the story from the beginnings of agriculture (Neolithic) to the Roman, Medieval, Renaissance and modern age. A large section is devoted to traditional agriculture in Lodi, with the reconstruction of workshops. The Bread Museum is set up in five rooms: the first features a display of cereals; in the second room you can see the various stages of the "Wheat - Flour - Bread " cycle, the third room contains more than 500 types of bread from Italian regions and many countries in Europe and beyond ; in the fourth room you can see the equipment used to make bread and the last room presents a collection of "grida" , i.e. the taxes and government regulations issued during the 18th and 19th centuries .
In addition, the Bolognini Castle offers impressive exhibition spaces for hosting weddings, conferences, meetings and events of all kinds.
